This blanket is called “Variations on a Theme” because as I worked on stitch swatches, I found myself wanting to create many variations of one basic stitch pattern just to see how far it could go. It’s a stitch sampler blanket using many of these patterns.
Here are all the CAL posts:
First post: Variations on a Theme CAL
Edging instructions for squares
Edging instructions for rectangles
Variations on a Theme Finished Blanket
And now… my blanket! I’m very happy with it, not only for its festive looks, but its warm memories as well. I’ve truly enjoyed this process.
I can’t help but imagine how pretty this would be in a square configuration with baby yarns. 🙂

It's beautiful, Carolyn! Thanks again for a wonderful CAL, and I look forward to doing more of them with you.

Carolyn, what a great project. Yours looks wonderful. I am not done yet but plan to finish it soon.
Mary says
Great job, Carolyn! I'm a little behind; I'm up to Sq. 17, but I'm getting there and will finish!
Next CAL? How about specifically a baby afghan?
Juanita says
I love it! Mine is almost done, just have to finish the borders. I also made some of the squares into washcloths, and used two squares and a flat braid join to make a hot water bottle cover for myself! This project has been fantastic!

What's next? Afghans are perfect for a mystery CAL so why not do another. This one could have a large square or circular center with thick lacey border. Each row of the border could be a different day in the CAL. Or maybe something with medallions & motifs instead of squares.

Thanks for hosting. It was definitely a lot of fun.

THANKS!!

I just added a photo of my afghan to the flickr group. Thanks for the fun, Carolyn!

I would have loved to participate, but a block a day was way too fast for me. I would have had to put down every other project I was working on to keep up with the mystery of the CAL. In the future, you might get more participants if you slow down the CAL.

I love the odds and ends colors you used! I'm up to square 2 is all! Been too sick to even think about crocheting, yet I've got 2 hats to make for a lady! No pattern, gotta copy an old worn out one! I WILL get to it though!
Unique2wh0 says
Thank you so much for the fun CAL Carolyn 🙂 I had fun and will continue having fun as I have a bit to go 🙂 thank you again so much!!
Jeannie says
I LOVE IT!!! and thank you for such a fun time! I'm slowly but surly getting there!

It's wonderful. I have a couple of squares done, but baby afghans had to be done first. Hopefully, I can work on the next one as you do it. I'll get there on this one – just not going to be done this week! LOL

Carolyn, I have looked around for an email address for you. I am currently working on the Pinwheel Potholder from your book Kitchen Basics in Cotton. I cannot figure out step #7 when the twist begins. I was hoping you could help.

Carolyn, This was my first corchet along. It was great fun coming to the site each day to get the instructions for the next block. I had never crocheted cables before, and the flat braid was new too. I posted pictures in Ravelry.
A shawl/wrap or afghan would be a great CAL…
hgainsford says
Caroly, I loved following your CAL!! My afghan is complete and I've been gatting compliments from everyone! Can't wait for the next CAL!
TheGrouchyCairn says
Oh! Your afghan is beautiful! I am still working up squares but am looking forward to the finished project. I have really enjoyed the pattern. I would definitely join in on another CAL, I love your designs!
BlueRoseLover says
A mystery baby afghan for your next CAL would be a lot of fun.
P.S. I thought the one square a day was just the right tempo for this last one. But then I don't have multiple projects going at the same time, usually just two at most!
Mary Beth says
I too thought a square a day was about right. Thanks for a fun project!
How about a jacket or vest made of various motifs for the next CAL? Kind of like a crazy quilt? I wouldn't have a use for a baby afghan as I'm not a grandmother yet and my kids are all raised.
Kath says
I loved this too.
A square a day was perfect for me too. Other CALs I was in went slower and I just never finished because I went on to other things.
Im currently addicted to large square stitch samplers *giggle* one of those would be great.
Or.. A DOLL would be amazing as a mystery CAL too.
BlueRoseLover says
I almost said a doll, too!! Or a vest or shawl would be wonderful. I don't have a need for a baby afghan right now, but I always like to have a couple on hand.
Jelibe says
This has been a great cal. I've just got a mountain of weaving in to do and its complete! I really should have done that as I went along, O well!
I like the idea of a baby ghan.
Sue says
Many thanks for this CAL. You made it easy to follow and fun. I have never made an afgan before as it seemed too much repetition. The mystery element of each block took that away. I am at the joining stage – using the twisted braiding version. Looks good and is easier than I feared. Many thanks again. How about a shawl CAL?
Ghost says
Still plugging away. But getting there.
Annemarie's Breiblog says
Gorgeous!!!
Jelibe says
I finally finished weaving in all those ends! Phew! I posted my ghan to my ravelry page (I'm Jelibe – if your on rav I'd like it if you added me :)).
I've also posted it to my blog http://www.jelibe-spritegirl.blogspot.com I'd love to hear what you think so please leave me a comment. 😀

I'm still working on mine as well. I've got all the squares and rectangles done, some still need edgings. I love this project and am looking forward to the final results!
I like the idea of a shawl CAL.
Ghost says
Where do we send out finished photos?
TheGrouchyCairn says
I'm still working on mine, too. Squares are done, a couple more rectangles to go and then I'll finish edging. Still loving the project, though!
I like the idea of a shawl CAL.
Sue says
I'm still working away at my afghan, but slowed down. I'm enjoying it, but my choice to use leftover sock yarn has meant my motifs have been a little miniature so I have decided to keep working to make it better, and use the little squares, too. Pics will follow in due course.
I'd love to make a crochet kimono jacket with motifs – we need to bring back crochet for wearables!
Thanks so much for a really enjoyable CAL.
