Happy day! Here’s a pretty little flower motif design named after my sweet granddaughter Taanvi.

I’ve added instructions and lots of step-by-step photos to guide you through making the motifs, joining as you go, and adding filler motifs in between if you want to use this motif to make a blanket, cushion cover, or something else you dream up!

Taanvi’s Flower

Size

Each flower motif is about 4½”/11½cm across made with worsted/aran/weight category 4 yarn and size H/8.0/5.00mm hook. Motifs may be made with any yarn with appropriate hook size.

Flower motifs may be made as single motifs for coasters, adornments or appliqués. Flower and filler motifs may be joined together as you go to make blankets of any size, cushion covers, etc. Instructions and yarn amounts are included for making a 50”x68”/127x173cm blanket, and yarn amounts are given so you may calculate yarn needed for a blanket or cushion cover of any size using up to 8 colors.

Materials

For single flower motif: five colors yarn of choice

For filler motif: one color yarn or mixed colors as desired. I used one color for fillers.

Hook size to go with yarn

I used seven colors of worsted/aran/weight category 4 yarn and size H/8.0/5.00mm hook; my yarn choice is Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in Hot Orchid, Yellow, Key Lime, Mango, Turquoise, Hot Rose and Peacock.

For blanket size approximately 50”x68”/127x173cm, 165 flower motifs and 140 filler motifs are needed.

Motifs are arranged in a grid 11×15 flower motifs with fillers between.

Note: I have not added any extra yardage in my calculations so you might want to get some extra of each color just to be on the safe side.

Blanket requires about 3569 total yards/3264m for flower motifs, and 835 total yards/764m for filler motifs. I chose to use a mix of 7 colors for my flower motifs and a single color for my fillers. Each flower motif uses a total of about 22 yards/20m; each filler motif uses about 6 yards/5½m.

To figure yardage needed of each color for using several colors for flowers, follow the chart below:

1 color: 3569 yds/3264m

2 colors: 1784 yds/1632m each color

3 colors: 1190 yds/1089m each color

4 colors: 892 yds/816m each color

5 colors: 714 yds/653m each color

6 colors: 595 yds/545m each color

7 colors: 510 yds/467m each color

8 colors: 446 yds/408m each color

Filler motifs take an additional 835 yards/764m of one color. If you want to mix up colors for the fillers just divide 835yds/764m by the number of colors used to get amount of each color needed.

Notes

Needle joins: You may end rnds with needle join or with a traditional sl st. I used needle joins on rnds 1 and 2, but the pattern is written with traditional sl st at the end of each round.

Standing stitches: You can begin rnd 2 with a standing dc if you wish, but the pattern is written with traditional ch 3 (counts as dc) to begin the rnd. Do not substitute a standing dc at the beginning of rnd 4. Rnds 3 and 5 begin with join with sc, which some crocheters refer to as a standing sc.

Magic loop: You may begin with a magic loop on both flower and filler motifs if you wish. The pattern is written with traditional ch 5, join to form ring.

There are tutorials and videos available online for needle joins (sometimes called invisible joins), standing stitches and magic loop.

Instructions

First flower motif or single motif

Rnd 1: With color A, ch 5, join with sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 1, 8 sc in ring, join with sl at in first sc. Fasten off. (8 sc)

Rnd 2: With color B, join with sl st in any sc, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of ch-3. Fasten off. (16 dc)

Rnd 3: Work this round loosely to help it lie flat. It may still cup a little but that is OK; it will flatten with the next round. With color C, join with sc in any st, ch 2, skip next st, (sc in next st, ch 2, skip next st) around, join. Fasten off. (8 sc, 8 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 4: Join color D with sl st in any ch-2 sp, ch 3, dc in same sp, ch 3, sl st in same sp, ch 1, (sl st in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, dc in same sp, ch 3, sl st in same sp, ch 1) around, join in first sl st. Fasten off. (8 petals)

Rnd 5: Join color E with sc in any skipped sc on rnd 3 working over ch-1 on rnd 4, * ch 3, (sc, ch 3, sc) in dc at center of next petal, ch 3 **, sc in next sc on rnd 3 working over ch-1 on rnd 4; repeat from * around ending last repeat at **, join. Fasten off.

Joining additonal flower motifs

Work each motif same as first motif through rnd 4.

For rnd 5, work joining lp in place of ch-3 at tip of petals as needed to join petals to tips of corresponding petals.

To work joining lp, instead of ch-3 at tip of petal, ch 1, sl st in ch-3 sp at tip of corresponding petal, ch 1. Follow these instructions to join two petals per flower side (see photos), working remainder of round as for round 5 of first motif.

Filler motif

Rnd 1: Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch-3. (12 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first 3 sts, make joining lp to join filler motif to one inside corner of flower motif (see photo showing where joining lps are made), (sc in next 3 sts, make joining lp to join to next inside corner of next flower motif) around, join. Fasten off.

Continue adding flower motifs and fillers for size desired.
