Voila! It’s Melanie, square #14 in the CAL Crochet A Long’s Friends Around the World CAL. If this is the first you’ve heard of the CAL, you can find everything you need to know on their blog here. I’m so honored to have been asked to be a part of this project with includes simple, elegant squares from many of my favorite designers around the world.
Melanie is named after a dear friend I met on Instagram! I love the way we can connect via social media with friends around the world, which is the premise behind this CAL. The project was created to celebrate the group’s one-year anniversary! I hope you’ll join in and make Melanie and the other squares.

Melanie Square – square #14 for Friends Around the World CAL

Size: 12” square
Materials
Worsted/Aran-weight yarn (weight category 4) in up to four colors. I used Impeccable by Loops and Threads in four colors (A, B, C, D)
Crochet hook size H/8/5.00 mm or size needed to obtain gauge
Gauge: Rounds 1-4 should measure 4 ¼ inches.
Special stitches
Needle join/invisible join (optional)
Berry stitch: Working on wrong side of work, (sc in next st, tr in next st) around as directed.
Beginning 3-dc cluster: Ch 2 (counts as first partial dc in cluster), (yo, pull up lp in same st or sp, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) 2 times, yo, pull through all 3 lps on hook.
3-dc cluster: Yo, pull up lp in indicated st or sp, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook, (yo, pull up lp in same st or sp, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) 2 times, yo, pull through all 4 lps on hook.
Instructions
Rnd 1: With A, ch 5, join with sl st in first ch to form ring (or make a magic ring), ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (or make a needle join). Fasten off. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: Join B with sl st in any st, make beginning 3-dc cluster in same st (see Special Stitches), ch 2, (3 dc cluster in next st—see Special Stitches—ch 2) around, join with sl st in top of beginning cluster. Fasten off. (12 3-dc clusters, 12 ch-2 sps)
Rnd 3: Join D with sc in any ch-2 sp, (ch 1, sc, ch 1) in same sp, (sc, ch 1) 2 times in each ch-2 sp around, join with sl st in first sc. Do not fasten off. (24 sc and 24 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 4: Continuing with D, sl st into ch-1 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, * hdc in next ch-1 sp, (sc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times, hdc in next ch-1 sp **, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp *; repeat from * to * around, ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (or make a needle join). Fasten off. (9 sts on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 5: Join C with sl st in any corner, ch 3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, dc in each st around with (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each corner, join with sl st in top of ch 3. Do not fasten off. (13 dc on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 6: Continuing with C, ch 3, dc in next st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner, dc in each st around with (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each corner, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (or make a needle join). Fasten off. (17 dc on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 7: Turn and work from wrong side. Join B with sc in any corner, ch 2, sc in same sp, * (tr in next st, sc in next st) 8 times, tr in next st **, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner *; repeat from * to * around ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (9 berry stitches and 10 sc on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 8: Working from right side, join A with sl st in any corner sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp, * skip next sc, (skip next tr, 2 dc in next sc) 8 times, skip next tr, skip next sc **, (3, dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner *; repeat from * to * around ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in top of ch 3. Do not fasten off. (22 dc on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 9: Continuing with A, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st around with (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each corner, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (or make a needle join). Fasten off. (26 dc on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 10: Turn and work from wrong side. Join D with sc in any corner, ch 2, sc in same st, * skip next dc, (tr in next st, sc in next st) 12 times, tr in next st **, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next corner *; repeat from * to * around ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (13 berry stitches on each side, 4 corner ch-4 sts)
Rnd 11: Working from right side, join C with sl st in any corner, ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp, * skip next sc, (skip next tr, 2 dc in next sc) 13 times **, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp *; repeat from * to * around ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in top of ch 3. Do not fasten off. (32 dc on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 12: Continuing with C, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st around with (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each corner, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (or make needle join). Fasten off. (36 dc on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
