Felicity 12” Crochet Square

Size: 12”
Materials
Worsted/Aran-weight yarn (weight category 4) in five colors. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in the following colors:
A Fisherman
B Toffee
C Mustard
D Cranberry
E Honey
Crochet hook size I/9/5.50 mm or size needed to obtain gauge
Gauge: Rnds 1-4 = 5 ¼”
Special stitches
Needle join/invisible join (optional)
Beginning 3-dc cluster: Ch 2 (counts as first partial dc in cluster), (yo, pull up lp in same st or sp, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) 2 times, yo, pull through all 3 lps on hook.
3-dc cluster: Yo, pull up lp in indicated st or sp, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook, (yo, pull up lp in same st or sp, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) 2 times, yo, pull through all 4 lps on hook.
Spike stitch: Pull up a loop in stitch below as indicated, pull loop up even with working row or round, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook.
Berry stitch: Working on wrong side of work, (sc in next st, tr in next st) around or across as directed.
Crossed stitch: Skip next st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st before dc just made.
Instructions
Rnd 1: With A, ch 5, join with sl st in first ch to form ring (or make a magic ring), ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (or make a needle join). Fasten off. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: Join B with sl st in any st, work beginning 3-dc cluster (see Special Stitches), ch 2, (3-dc cluster in next st, ch 2) around, join with sl st in top of beginning cluster. Fasten off. (12 3-dc clusters, 12 ch-2 sps)
Rnd 3: Join C with sl st in any ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same sp, ch 1, (3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1) around, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (or make a needle join). Fasten off. (12 3-dc groups, 12 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 4: Join D with sc in first dc of any 3-dc group, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, spike stitch in top of skipped cluster below on rnd 2 (see Special Stitches), sc in next dc, 2 sc in next dc, sc in next dc, spike stitch in top of skipped cluster below on rnd 2) around, join with sl st in first sc (or make a needle join). Fasten off. (48 sc, 12 spike sts)
Rnd 5: Turn and work from wrong side of work. Join E with sc in any st, tr in next st, (sc in next st, tr in next st) around, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (30 berry stitches)
Rnd 6: Turn and work from right side of work. Join B with sc in any sc, ch 1, skip next tr, (sc in next sc, ch 1, skip next tr) around, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (30 sc, 30 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 7: Join C with sc in any ch-1 sp, sc in same sp, (2 sc in next ch-1 sp) 2 times, 3 sc in next ch-1 sp, * (2 sc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times, 3 sc in next ch-1 sp *; repeat from * to * around to last two ch-1 sps, 2 sc in next ch-1 sp, 3 sc in last ch-1 sp, join with sl st in first sc (or make a needle join). Fasten off. (68 sc)
Rnd 8: Join A with sl st in any st, ch 3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same st, * dc in next st, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 8 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next st **, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st *; repeat from * to * around ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (or make a needle join). Fasten off. (20 sts on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 9: Join E with sl st in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, * dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, dc in next 3 sts **, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp *; repeat from * to * around ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (or make a needle join). Fasten off. (24 sts on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 10: Join A with sc in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 2, sc in same sp, sc in each st around with (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (26 sts on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 11: Join D with sl st in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, *(skip next st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st—crossed stitch made, see Special Stitches) 13 times **, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp *; repeat from * to * around ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (or make a needle join). Fasten off. (30 sts on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 12: Join A with sc in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 2, sc in same sp, skip next st (skipping the hidden stitch), sc in each st around skipping the first st on each side (the hidden stitch) with (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (31 sts on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 13: Turn and work from wrong side of work. Join B with sc in any corner sp, ch 2, sc in same sp *, tr in next st, (sc in next st, tr in next st) across to next corner **, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner sp *; repeat from * to * around ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (16 berry stitches on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Rnd 14: Note: skip all trs in this rnd and work only in scs. Turn and work from right side of work. Join A with sl st in any corner sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, *dc in next sc, (2 dc in next sc) 15 times, dc in next sc **, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner sp *; repeat from * to * around ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in top of ch 3 (or make a needle join). Fasten off. (36 sts on each side, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
