Note: In the “Notes on Beginnings and Endings” section of my Beloved Square pattern, I talk in depth about all the options for making your starting loop (including magic circle), making your first stitches of each round (including standing stitches), and joining rounds. I also recommend the video tutorials on the Moogly blog.
Instructions
STEP 1: In this step, you will work rnds 1-9 to create octagon shape.
Rnd 1: With A, make magic circle or ch 5, join with sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 3 or work beginning standing dc, 15 dc in ring, join. Fasten off. Turn. (16 dc)
Rnd 2: Working on back side of rnd 1, join B with sc in any st, tr in same st, (sc, tr) in each st around, join. Fasten off. Turn. (16 sc, 16 tr creating 16 dimensional stitches on right side of work)
Rnd 3: Working on front side, join C with sc in any sc, ch 1, skip next tr, (sc in next sc, ch 1, skip next tr) around, join. Do not fasten off. (16 sc, 16 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 4: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, 5 dc in next ch-1 sp, (sc in next ch-1 sp, 5 dc in next ch-1 sp), around, join. Fasten off. (8 sc, 8 5-dc scallops)
Rnd 5: Join D with sc in center dc of any 5-dc group, 5 dc in next sc, (sc in center dc of next 5-dc group, 5 dc in next sc) around, join. Fasten off. (8 sc, 8 5-dc scallops)
Rnd 6: Join A with sc in center dc of any 5-dc group, 7 tr in next sc, (sc in center dc of next 5-dc group, 7 tr in next sc) around, join. Fasten off. (8 sc, 8 7-tr scallops)
Rnd 7: Join B with sc in center tr of any 7-tr group, sc in same tr, * sc in next tr, hdc in next tr, dc in next tr, 2 dc in next sc, dc in next tr, hdc in next tr, sc in next tr **, 2 sc in next tr; repeat from * around ending last repeat at **, join. Fasten off. Turn. (80 sts = 32sc, 16 hdc, 32 dc)
Rnd 8: Working from back side, join D with sc in first sc in any 2-sc pair, tr in next st, (sc in next st, tr in next st) around, join. Fasten off. Turn. (40 sc, 40 tr)
Rnd 9: Working on front side, join C with sc in sc above center of any scallop on rnd 6, * ch 1, sc in same st to create corner, (ch 1, skip next tr, sc in next sc) 5 times; repeat from * around ending last repeat with (ch 1, skip next tr, sc in next sc) 4 times, ch 1, join. Fasten off. (48 ch-1 sps, 8 corners)
Note: To prepare for the next step, you may wish to mark the 8 corner ch-1 sps with stitch markers, as they will be used as reference points.
STEP 2: In this step, you will work 3 short rows on each of four sides of the octagon (every other side) to create square.
Row 1: Join A with sl st in second ch-1 sp past any corner, 5 dc in next ch-1 sp, sl st in next ch-1 sp. Fasten off. Turn. (one 5-dc scallop)
Row 2: Working from back, join B with sl st in next ch-1 sp past corner and before scallop, (sc, tr, sc) in first dc on scallop, (tr, sc) in each of next 4 dc, sl st in ch-1 sp before next corner. Fasten off. Turn. (6 sc, 5 tr)
Row 3: Working on front side, join D with sl st in corner ch-1 sp (on rnd 9) before scallop, (ch 1, sc in next sc on row 2 of scallop) 6 times, ch 1, sl st in next corner ch-1 sp on rnd 9. Fasten off. (6 sc, 7 ch-1 sps)
Step 3: In this step, you will work last rnds to finish square.
Rnd 10: Identify and mark center ch-1 sp of the 7 ch-1 sps at each corner scallop. Join C with standing dc, or join with sl st and ch 3 for first dc, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, * 2 dc in each of next 3 ch-1 sps, 2 dc in next corner ch-1 sp on rnd 9, 2 dc in each of next 5 ch-1 sps, 2 dc in next corner ch-1 sp on rnd 9, 2 dc in each of next 3 ch-1 sps **, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in marked ch-1 sp to form corner; repeat from * around ending last repeat at **, join. Fasten off. (15 pairs of dc—30 dc—on each side with ch-2 in each corner)
Rnd 11: Join B with standing dc in any ch-2 corner sp, or join with sl st and ch 3 for first dc, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, dc in each st around with (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each corner sp, join. Fasten off. (34 dc on each side with ch-2 in each corner)
Note: There are several options for rnd 12. Your square may already measure 12” on each side after rnd 11, in which case rnd 12 is not needed. Or, depending on how much more is needed, it may be worked in sc, hdc or dc to obtain 12” size. Rnd 12 may also be repeated as needed in to obtain 12” size.
For mine, I needed a round of sc.
Rnd 12 in sc: Join desired color with sc in any ch-2 corner sp, ch 2, sc in same sp, sc in each st around with (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner ch-2 sp, join. Fasten off. (36 sc on each side with ch-2 in each corner)
Rnd 12 in hdc: Join desired color with standing hdc in any corner ch-2 sp, or join with sl st and ch 2 for first hdc, (hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in same sp, hdc in each st around with (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in each corner ch-2 sp, join. Fasten off. (38 hdc on each side with ch-2 in each corner)
Rnd 12 in dc: Join desired color with standing dc in any ch-2 corner sp, or join with sl st and ch 3 for first dc, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, dc in each st around with (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each corner sp, join. Fasten off. (38 dc on each side with ch-2 in each corner)

I can not link this pattern in my Ravelry projects. Is it called something else over there?
