Whether you’re headed to the beach or poolside, the crochet Surfside Bag is fashionable and handy for carrying a towel and a few necessities. It’s made with 100% cotton yarn for sturdiness and washability, and the pretty and unusual shell stitch works up quickly.

320 yds (293 m) 100% cotton worsted weight yarn (Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Stripes color #21317 Violet Stripes)

H (5.00mm) crochet hook

 

Gauge

Gauge is not critical except to achieve yarn amount shown. 15 dc = 4”; 6 rows/rnds dc = 4”

 

Instructions

Rnd 1: Ch 5, join with sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch 3. (12)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, join. (24)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next st, (2 dc in next st, dc in next st) around, join. (36)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next 2 sts, (2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts) around, join. (48)

Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next 3 sts, (2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts) around, join. (60)

Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next 4 sts, (2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts) around, join. (72)

Rnd 7: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next 5 sts, (2 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts) around, join. (84)

Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in same st, skip next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st—shell made, (skip next 2 sts, sc in next st, skip next 2 sts, shell in next st) around, join with sl st in first sc. (14 shells)

Rnd 9: Sl st in next 3 sts, ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in same st, ch 1, (shell in center dc of next shell, ch 1) around, join with sl st in top of ch 3.

Rnd 10: Sl st in next 3 sts, ch 3, 4 dc in same st, sc in next ch-1 sp, (shell in center dc of next shell, sc in next ch-1 sp) around, join.

Rnds 11-23: Repeat rnds 9-10 ending with rnd 9.

Rnd 24: Ch 1, sc in each dc around, skipping ch-1 sps, join. (70)

Rnds 25-27: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join.

Rnd 28: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 8 sts, ch 70, skip 18 sts, sc in next 17 sts, ch 70, skip 18 sts, sc in remaining 8 sts, join.

Rnd 29: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 8 sts, sc in next 70 ch, sc in next 17 sts, sc in next 70 ch, sc in remining 8 sts, join.

Rnds 30-32: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join.

Fasten off.

    Beautiful bag!! I have been looking for a shell pattern bag for quite some time. They all seem to be the same, but yours seems to have a different look to it – love it! I am definitely going to give this one a try. I have only ever done blankets and scarves. I am usually not good with things in the round, somehow they always turn out wonky.
    Do you ever do video tutorials? I seem to do better with visual help than with a pattern. But this is such a beautiful bag, I am just going to have to give it my best try!
