It’s almost turkey time! This little crochet guy will look great hanging in your kitchen for Thanksgiving. I hope you will enjoy making him. A word about safety

This pattern is intended for decorative use only. I do not recommend this for use with hot dishes, open flame stoves, or near hot electric burners. The item shown is made with 100% acrylic yarn, which is not safe for use with heat. The item is made with only one thickness, which is too thin for a pot holder. Also, the relatively open weave of the double crochet stitches used makes it too “holey” to use with heat. Plastic wiggle eyes will melt possibly causing a hazard.

If you wish to make it for use with hot dishes, I recommend making it in cotton yarn. Make two thicknesses of 7 1/4” background circles working in single crochet, not double crochet as this pattern states. Learn more about crocheting flat circles in single crochet in this post and this post. Sew turkey to one piece as directed in this pattern. Embroider eyes; do not use plastic wiggle eyes. Then work shell stitch border through both layers.

Turkey

Feather (make four rust and three pumpkin)

Rnd 1: Ch 12, 3 sc in second ch from hook, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next 5 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, 3 sc in last ch; working on opposite side of starting ch, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next 5 ch, hdc in last 2 ch, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (24 sts around)

Head

Rnd 1: With brown, ch 4, join with sl st in first ch to form ring (or make a magic ring), ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch-3. Fasten off. (12 dc)

Body

Rnd 1: Work same as head rnd 1; do not fasten off.

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, join with sl st in top of ch-3. Fasten off. (24 dc)

Snood (red part beside beak)

With red, ch 4. Fasten off. Do not weave in ends.

Circle

Rnds 1-2: With red, work same as body; do not fasten off.

Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in next st, (dc in next st, 2 dc in next st) around, join with sl st in top of ch-3. (36 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next 2 sts, (2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts) around, join with sl st in top of ch-3. (48 dc)

Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st (dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st) around, join with sl st in top of ch-3. (60 dc)

Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next 4 sts, (2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts) around, join with sl st in top of ch-3. Fasten off. (72 dc)

Rnd 7: With pumpkin, join with sc in any st, skip next st, 5 dc in next st, skip next st, (dc in next st, skip next st, 5 dc in next st, skip next st) around, join with sl st in first sc, ch 10 for hanging loop, sl st in same st. Fasten off. (18 shells)

Beak and snood

Using straight stitch, tapestry needle and pumpkin, embroider two stitches for beak. Embroider feet as shown in photo. For snood, place red piece alongside beak; bring ends of ch-4 to back of work and weave in all ends.

Glue wiggle eyes in place.

Assembly

Fan feathers out on red circle in arrangement shown below. Pin and sew in place.

Place body over base of feathers and sew in place. Place head above body overlapping slightly; sew in place.
